Hand sanitizers are being packaged in beer cans, water bottles, juice bottles, vodka bottles and children’s food pouches, the Food and drug administration explained. Some sanitizers also comprise flavors, these kinds of as chocolate or raspberry, which could cause confusion.
“I am increasingly involved about hand sanitizer being packaged to look to be consumable solutions, these kinds of as toddler food or drinks,” Stephen Hahn, MD, the Food and drug administration commissioner, explained in a statement.
Unintentionally consuming hand sanitizer — even a small quantity — is potentially deadly to children.
“These solutions could confuse people into accidentally ingesting a potentially fatal merchandise,” he explained. “It’s perilous to incorporate scents with food flavors to hand sanitizers which children could think smells like food, try to eat and get alcohol poisoning.”
For case in point, the Food and drug administration obtained a report about a buyer who obtained a bottle that seemed like drinkable water but was essentially hand sanitizer. In yet another report, a retailer educated the agency about a hand sanitizer merchandise that was promoted in a pouch that appears like a children’s snack and had cartoons on it.
