LAUNCHING SOON: EMPOWERING YOU WITH INSIGHTS INTO ADDICTIVE EATING
The Identification, Management & Treatment of Processed Food Addiction
During the pandemic and post-pandemic, have you, a patient, or somebody you know had the experience of standing in front of the ‘snack’ cupboard, drawer, or open fridge looking for something to eat to just take the edge off amidst this great period of stress and uncertainty?
Have you noticed when this compelling emotion or feeling comes on? Or have you, while being in a state of heightened emotions, stress, or boredom, polished off a whole bag or bar of snacks unconsciously – without even realising it?
The pandemic has plunged the world into chaos, uncertainty, and disruption and this has had a negative impact on an individual’s physical, emotional and mental well-being. Many have had to deal with loneliness, trauma, stress, anxiety, and loss and this has had ramifications on all spheres of an individual’s life – including the most basic aspect of sustaining ourselves – that of eating.
The marketing of ultra-processed food has proven to be a massive contribution to the global food addiction pandemic as well. In a recent piloted study on The Marketing of Ultraprocessed Foods in a National Sample of U.S. Supermarket Circulars, results have shown that these highly processed foods accounted for 45.7% of advertisements, followed by minimally processed foods at 41.2%, moderately processed foods at 8.0%, and basic processed foods at 5.1%. This study demonstrated the prevalence of advertisements for ultra-processed foods and beverages in United States supermarkets.
The human body needs food to provide energy and nutrition. However, people can feel addicted to food when they become dependent on certain types of foods. Any food can make a person feel addictive tendencies, however, sugar and processed foods have the most significant ability to do this.
At Nutrition Network, we have identified the need to address the topic of Addictive Eating which may occur in response to an emotion, such as stress, sadness, grief, anger, or anxiety, and are therefore launching an Addictive Eating training, aimed at medical and allied healthcare practitioners who may be treating addicted patients or clients.
We’ve brought together some of the world’s leading experts in food addiction and Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction (TCR) as a management tool, to bring you leading, flexible online learning on this topic.
