National Library of Medicine Acquires the Papers of Louis W. Sullivan, MD

The Countrywide Library of Drugs (NLM) is honored to announce its acquisition of the papers of Louis W. Sullivan, MD, former United States Secretary of Overall health and Human Companies (HHS). This is the to start with collection of papers from a former HHS Secretary, obtained by the NLM and will be part of the archival collections of the world’s biggest health care library and institute of the Countrywide Institutes of Overall health (NIH).

Louis W. Sullivan is an African American physician who served as secretary of HHS from 1989-1993 and as dean and president of Morehouse College of Drugs (MSM) from 1975-1989 and from 1993-2002. The Countrywide Institute on Minority Overall health and Overall health Disparities at NIH was to start with recognized as an Business underneath the NIH Director by means of Secretary Sullivan in 1990 and was elevated to an Institute in 2010.

The Louis W. After holding positions at Harvard Healthcare College, Seton Corridor College or university of Drugs, Boston College Healthcare Center, and Boston Metropolis Clinic, Dr. Sullivan returned to Morehouse College or university in 1975 to provide as dean and director of the Healthcare Instruction Software. Beneath his leadership, the Healthcare Instruction Software turned independent from Morehouse College or university in 1981 and was renamed Morehouse College of Drugs (MSM). Dr. Sullivan served as president and dean of MSM prior to and adhering to his tenure as secretary of HHS. He was also chair of the President’s Board of Advisors on Traditionally Black Faculties and Universities from 2002-2009 and was co-chair of the President’s Commission on HIV and AIDS from 2001-2006. 

Dr. Sullivan is chairman of the Sullivan Alliance to Change the Overall health Professions and is the founding president of the Association of Minority Overall health Professions Educational institutions (AMHPS). He is the creator of The Morehouse Mystique: Turning into a Doctor at the Nation’s Most recent African American Healthcare College (with Marybeth Gasman, 2012, Johns Hopkins College Press) and his autobiography Breaking Floor: My Everyday living in Drugs (with David Chanoff, 2014, College of Ga Press).

The NLM History of Drugs Division homes the papers of notable general public overall health leaders, including other officials of the U.S. Section of Overall health and Human Companies (and its predecessor the U.S. Section of Overall health, Instruction and Welfare), including Faye Abdellah, Edward Brandt, Emery Johnson, and June Osborn the papers of NIH Directors Harold Varmus, Bernadine Healy, Donald Fredrickson, James A.
